You don’t have to drive far from your MTSU apartments to find an amazing weekend getaway. In fact, that’s one of the best parts about living in the middle of the country. You’re never far from a spectacular city, an amazing State Park or a beautiful vista.

In this week’s blog post, we’re talking about destinations that are close to University Ridge. Fall is getting closer, and you’re going to get the itch to take a drive to see all the changing leaves. Any of the places on this list would make a great destination for a solo trip or a road trip with friends.

Here are three day trips that are definitely worth taking next time you have a free weekend. All of these destinations are less than 3 hours from your apartments near MTSU.

Mammoth Cave National Park

Distance from University Ridge: 2 hours 6 minutes

Head down to Kentucky to get a taste of the underworld. No, we’re not talking about the place from greek mythology. We’re talking about the real underworld—the unexplored caves that open up right underneath us. Mammoth Cave is the largest cave system in the world, and it’s practically in our backyard.

There are a variety of different ways to explore the Mammoth Cave system. One option is to allow yourself to be taken on a guided tour by a professional guide who will explain every little detail about the cave and its history. You’d never be able to learn these tidbits of information on your own, so the guide is always a solid option.

Another option is to tour the cave on your own using only a personal lamp. These tours are a bit more exciting because you get to go at your own pace and be guided by your own lamp. The third, and most wild option is to go on a tour that allows you to stray away from all the paths that are built into the cafe. No matter which method of exploration you choose, you’ll find that Mammoth Cave is practically never-ending.

Rock Island State Park

Distance from University Ridge: 1 hour 9 minutes

When you have the chance to go to a place where three rivers meet at the headwaters of a lake, you have to go for it. Rock Island State Park has tons of opportunities for hiking, fishing, swimming, kayaking, or whatever other outdoor activities you might be into. The highlight of the park is Great Falls. This 30-foot waterfall is absolutely majestic and will give you a guaranteed 100 likes on your next Instagram post. For even better views, check out the Caney Fork Gorge, which opens up to provide visitors with expansive views of the surrounding hills and forests.

Rock City Gardens

Distance from University Ridge: 1 hour 44 minutes

Alright, we know we talked about expansive views in the last section, but you actually won’t find more spectacular views than at Rock City Gardens.  Located down south in Georgia, Rock City Gardens has mountains and overlooks that let visitors see SEVEN different stats in the surrounding valley. Seriously, this place is incredible. If you’re looking for a mind-blowing weekend getaway, look no further than Rock City Gardens.
